This week it was our pleasure to present a cheque to Reuben’s Retreat for a whopping £2,703.05 raised thanks to the generosity of our Leeds office. We have been inspired and amazed by the lengths people have gone to in support of the charity. A very special mention to Julie Todd (Business Travel Consultant) who rose to the challenge of taking on the Paris Marathon this year in aid of Reuben's Retreat. This was her first ever Marathon and we couldn’t have been prouder than when she crossed the finish line in 5 hours 16 minutes …we’re exhausted just thinking about it! Also a huge thank-you and well-done to Jan Telford who completed a 10k hike in Arnside on behalf of the charity (Both Jan and Julie are pictured below) On behalf of Reuben’s Retreat we would like to thank all of our staff who gave so very generously.
Presenting the cheque to Nicola Graham (founder of the charity) and meeting her team gave us the opportunity to learn first-hand how the work they are doing there continues to change lives. We discovered how Reuben’s Retreat is not just about remembering one very special little boy, but is a celebration of all children and their families. This is a place where parents can bring a child who may be terminally ill or have a limited life expectancy, along with their siblings, and create wonderful family memories that will last forever. It also serves as a bereavement counselling and support centre for parents and siblings who have suffered the loss of a child. It’s not only a place that celebrates life, it is also a place to remember and rebuild lives.
Reuben’s Retreat understands the complexities of grief. Founded by Nicola Graham following the loss of her own child, the charity brings together people and families who may otherwise feel absolutely isolated and alone in their situation - then provides the support that many of them need to simply keep on going.
Nicola’s own son Reuben was diagnosed with an aggressive cancerous brain tumour while on a family holiday in Devon. On the 21st August 2012 aged just 23 months Reuben passed away in his mummy’s arms. 2 days later, inspired by Reuben’s bravery and the families they had met on their journey Reuben’s Retreat was born. Based at the former Woods Hospital in Glossop the charity’s goal is to continue renovating the building, creating amongst many other things: A hydrotherapy pool & changing suite, and well-being and day-care facilities for terminally ill children and their families.
Our picture above shows David Walsh and Jan Telford meeting Nicola Graham (Centre) and hearing more about the incredible work taking place at Reuben's Retreat.
Reuben’s Retreat does not receive any government or statutory funding but as Nicola told us “Everyone has something to bring to Reuben’s Retreat. This project will be built on love, compassion and generosity’. If you would like to make a donation to Reuben’s Retreat please text TLTM50 followed by the amount you would like to donate to 70070.
