Belvoir Castle is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Rutland. The family have lived at Belvoir in an unbroken line for almost a thousand years. Crowning a hill in Leicestershire, its turrets and towers rise above the Vale of Belvoir like an illustration in a romantic fairy-tale. If the castle seems familiar it might be due to the fact that it has featured in various recent Hollywood blockbusters, including The Da Vinci Code, The Young Victoria, A Royal Night Out and Young Sherlock Holmes. But unlike the make-believe of the movie world, Belvoir Castle is the real deal ! Dating back to the time of William the Conqueror the castle has endured many attacks, surviving both the War of the Roses in 1464 and the English Civil War. The castle you see today was built for the 5th Duke and Duchess of Rutland between 1801 and 1832 by architect James Wyatt. The castle was given the French name Belvoir – meaning beautiful view – and remains one of the most magnificent and beautiful Regency houses in England.
